Van Halen is an American hard rock band formed in Pasadena, California in 1972. They enjoyed success from the release of their self titled debut album in 1978. As of 2007 Van Halen has sold more than 80 million albums worldwide and have had the most number one hits on the Billboard Mainstream Rock chart. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, Van Halen is the 19th best selling band/artist of all time with sales of over 56 million albums in the USA and is one of five rock bands that have had two albums sell more than 10 million copies in the USA.

Venom are an English extreme metal band, formed in late 1979 in Newcastle upon Tyne. Considered a seminal influence for thrash and black metal and coming to prominence towards the end of the 'New Wave of British Heavy Metal', Venom have found little mainstream success or critical acclaim, but are widely regarded as highly influential, particularly for their first two albums, Welcome to Hell (1981) and Black Metal (1982). The title of Venom's second album would become influential and definitive enough to describe an entire subgenre called black metal, a category under which the band is most commonly referred. The nature of Venom's high-pitch guitars, harsh vocals, use of pseudonyms, and unrelenting emphasis on Satanic lyrics and imagery is considered the template for the subgenre's later successes, and arguably for the broader extreme metal movement in general.

Vintersorg (pronounced "Winter Sorrow" in English) is a Swedish folk/viking black metal band from Skellefteå, Sweden, formed in 1994 under the name Vargatron (Wolfthrone in English). Lyrically, the band deals with topics on fantasy, mythology, nature, the cosmos, and metaphysics. Vintersorg means "Winter Sorrow," but the name was taken from the Isfolket series by Margit Sandemo, where the character Vintersorg is the son of a great pagan leader. The project was originally formed in 1994 to "push the limits" of black metal music, where the vocals are mostly clean sung, and only a few parts per song that had the traditional screaming vocals. The sound of Vintersorg has vastly changed over the years, as their earlier sound had more of a folk influence, and later on, more of an experimental sound. This transformation was most notably marked with the release of the Cosmic Genesis album, and the change in sound progressed from album to album, with the 2004 album The Focusing Blur being an extremely avant-garde album. Notably, the vocal styles have shifted quite noticeably throughout Vintersorg's existence, with "Cosmic Genesis" featuring low-pitched clean vocals with the occasional Viking growl, and "Solens Rötter" featuring more high-pitched and melodic vocals.

Visceral Evisceration was an Austrian metal band that blended death metal and doom metal, who were formed in 1991 in Vienna. They were one of the first extreme metal bands to include female operatic vocals in their style, contrasted by male grunts and clear vocals. Their songs are generally long and epic, combining slow doom riffs with mid-paced death metal. Lyrically, they focused on issues more prevalent in goregrind, seemingly inspired by bands as Carcass and country-mates Pungent Stench. They stand unique this combination. This lyrical style was also reflected in their controversial artwork. After a demo, they released their sole album in 1994 on Napalm Records, titled Incessant Desire for Palatable Flesh. After the release of the album, they left Napalm Records and changed their name to As I Lay Dying and released a promo in 1995, before they broke up.

Vital Remains is an American death metal band from Providence, Rhode IslandFormed in 1989, Vital Remains' original line up was comprised of guitarists Tony Lazaro and Paul Flynn, vocalist Jeff Gruslin, bassist Tom Supkow and drummer Chris Dupont. Vomitory is a Swedish Brutal Death metal band formed in 1989 by guitarist Urban Gustafsson and bass guitarist Ronnie Olson. Influenced by bands such as Sodom, Napalm Death, Slayer and Venom, the band has released a total of six albums (as of 2007), and are currently signed to Metal Blade Records.

Vesania is a Polish blackened death metal band. They were formed in 1997 with three members: Orion (guitars and lead vocals) (Behemoth, Neolithic), Daray (drums) (Vader, Neolithic, ex-Pyorrhoea), and Heinrich (bass) (Rootwater) Later members were Hatrah (keyboards)who left the band in 1999, Annahvahr (guitars and vocals), and Siegmar (keyboards) who replaced Hatrah in 2000. Their style is similar to the newer material by Behemoth in its intensity. However, the band incorporates much more symphonic elements and black metal (tremolo) riffing. Their first album appearance Moonastray was a split with Black Altar and was released in 2002 by Odium Records exclusively in Poland, the release was limited to 666 copies and each album was signed with blood. 2003 saw the release of their first full length album Firefrost Arcanum by Empire Records across all of Europe. This was followed by the departure of band member Annahvahr. Their second album God the Lux was released in April, 2005. Shortly thereafter Valeo (Sammath Naur, Mortis Dei) joined the band as lead guitarist. Their third album Distractive Killusions was released in 2007 on Napalm Records. Vader is a death metal band from Olsztyn, Poland founded in 1986. They stand as one of the best-known European death metal bands utilizing a style of death metal different from that of their American counterparts, but their approach is firmly based upon the template created by Morbid Angel. For example, many bands of this genre tend to play guitar solos and lead parts which do not adhere strictly to traditional musical principles (such as being in key) and make extensive use of tremolo bar, creating a rather dissonant sound. Vader, on the other hand, whilst often playing in this style, occasionally diverge and play diminished, augmented, and minor scale solos. The band is also different in that vocalist Piotr Wiwczarek's vocals do not follow the standard sound widely considered acceptable for death metal. While his vocal delivery remains extreme, it is a much throatier approach, giving him the ability to enunciate words more clearly than most death metal vocalists.
